Mommy & Me Classes in the Roanoke Valley

Words by Grace McCardle

Your Guide to Classes and Activities for You and Your Baby

Finding fun things to do with your baby or toddler isn't always easy, especially if you're looking for activities you'll both enjoy. The Roanoke Valley has no shortage of options for families with young children ages 0–4, whether it's a library storytime at 3 Balloons or a music class at Melody Makers. Getting out of the house breaks up the week and gives everyone, little ones and parents alike, a chance to explore and meet some new faces.

This guide highlights mommy-and-me classes and activities throughout Roanoke, Roanoke County, Salem, Vinton, and Botetourt County. Here you'll find plenty of local places to beat a rainy afternoon or just discover your family's new weekly favorite.

Why Movement Matters for Babies & Toddlers

Physical movement gives young children a way to strengthen their growing bodies while also supporting their developing brains. Through movement, kids build a connection between body and mind, one that lays the groundwork for everything from schoolwork to making friends down the road.

A recent study published in Pediatric Research found that babies who reached early gross motor milestones, like rolling, crawling, and pulling up to stand sooner also showed better language and social development at the same time. Researchers noted that once babies start moving independently, their communication skills tend to take a noticeable leap forward too.

So whether it's a structured class or just chasing bubbles around the living room, that wiggly energy is part of how your little one learns.

Find a Class or Group In Roanoke for Babies & Toddlers

Ready to put some of that movement into practice? Before you sign up for the first class you find, it helps to know what you're actually looking for. Ask whether the class is truly parent-and-child, some are drop-off only once your child hits a certain age and each location can be different. Check the group size, since a smaller class usually means more one-on-one attention for a wiggly toddler, and look for a teacher who seems genuinely comfortable with the chaos that comes with a room full of little ones. Timing matters too, a class scheduled right in the middle of nap time or your baby's usual meltdown hour is setting everyone up for a rough afternoon. And don't overlook location, a great class in Cave Spring sounds a lot less appealing when you live in Vinton and it means driving across town during rush hour with a baby in the backseat.

Roanoke Dance and Movement Classes for Babies & Toddlers

Every parent needs a few go-to indoor spots for rainy afternoons or stretches of summer heat, and the Roanoke Valley has plenty of them. Whether your little one wants to climb or just have room to run, there's a movement class nearby to match.

Kinderdance

For kids who love to move, Kinderdance introduces preschool-aged children to dance and basic gymnastics through playful, hands-on classes. Their Dance with Me sessions pair kids with their caregiver, building balance and coordination while making physical activity feel like play instead of practice.

Little Leapers Roanoke

Little Leapers offers a parent-assisted ballet class called My Little Shadow for kids ages 18 months to 2 years. For 45 minutes, little ones try basic ballet steps and simple stretches while building balance and coordination along the way. Every class wraps up with a fairy tale and a "story dance," where kids dress up and act out the story right alongside their teacher.

Mountain Movers Creative Arts

This studio’s Magic Movers class is built for the littlest dancers, kids 18 months to 2 years, and their caregiver for a class that's part dance and part imaginative play. Little ones build balance and coordination without it ever feeling like practice, since the whole thing is wrapped in play and creativity.

Prestige Gymnastics Academy

Prestige Gymnastics Academy offers beginner gymnastics for some of the youngest athletes in the Roanoke Valley. Its parent-and-child Little Gems program (ages 1–3) uses obstacle courses and movement games to build coordination while strengthening the parent-child bond along the way.

Ring Gymnastics

This gym offers weekly mommy-and-me classes called Fun with My Big. This class is geared for kids ages 1-3 with a grown-up participating right alongside them the whole time. It's a simple entry point into gymnastics, more about exploring and building confidence together than mastering any particular skill just yet.

Roanoke Academy of Gymnastics

Roanoke Academy of Gymnastics offers classes for young children starting at just 18 months old. The parent-assisted Little Dippers class, for kids ages 18 months to 3 years, builds balance and confidence through rolling and swinging.

Fitness Classes & Outdoor Groups for Babies and Toddlers

If you're ready to switch up your usual routine, the Roanoke Valley has plenty of ways to get moving with your little one, from stroller workouts to beginner sports programs. It's a good excuse to stay active and meet other local families at the same time.

It's an easy, low-pressure way to get some movement in and meet other local moms who are figuring out the same season of life.

FIT4MOM Roanoke

FIT4MOM Roanoke builds workouts around real family life. Their signature Stroller Strides classes combine strength training and cardio with activities that keep kids entertained, all while they ride along safely in the stroller. Beyond the workouts, FIT4MOM runs a Mom Walk Club and regular playgroups.

Soccer Shots Southwest Virginia

Designed for children as young as 1 year and 8 months old, Soccer Shots Southwest Virginia combines soccer fundamentals with imaginative games and age-appropriate activities that build listening skills and coordination. Their engaging curriculum emphasizes fun over competition, making it an excellent first organized sport for toddlers and preschoolers.

Looking for a calmer activity to enjoy together? YAMAMA & Lil' Yogis Yoga Studio offers parent-and-child yoga classes where babies and toddlers can stretch and play alongside their caregivers. Classes weave together music, simple yoga poses, mindfulness, and plenty of fun, creating a relaxed space for families to slow down and spend quality time together.

Mommy & Me Story Times in the Roanoke Valley

If you're looking for an easy outing with a baby or toddler, storytime at your local library or local bookshop is hard to beat. Kids get books, songs, and movement, parents get a chance to meet other families, and the best part, it's free.

Storytime

3 Balloons

3 Balloons, a nonprofit bookstore in the Roanoke Valley, hosts a story time on Saturdays at 11:00 a.m. Stocked with new and used books for readers ages 2-10, proceeds from book sales help fund the organization's mission: employing adults with developmental disabilities.

Roanoke Valley Public Libraries

Every library system in the Valley offers free storytimes for babies through preschoolers. Roanoke Public Libraries and Roanoke County Public Libraries both run age-based storytimes citywide and countywide, plus special programs like Ballet & Books. Salem Public Library tailors its sessions by age group, and Botetourt County branches in Blue Ridge, Buchanan, Eagle Rock, and Fincastle include options like Special Needs Storytime.

Science Museum of Western Virginia

The Science Museum of Western Virginia has hosted science story times though not on a set recurring schedule. Check their events calendar before you go to see if one's coming up.

Roanoke Music & Art Classes for Babies & Toddlers

If your little one loves to sing or make a little noise, a music class can be a fun way to spend time together, and most welcome parents right in to join the fun. For those little ones who love to create, art programs in Roanoke offer the same kind of hands-on play, just with paint, clay and even 3D printing.

Melody Makers

Getting little ones moving is the whole point here, singing, dancing, rhythm games, all in one upbeat class. Because caregivers participate right alongside their children, it's an easy class for little ones to settle into while parents join in on the fun.

The Music Circle

Families come together for singing and simple instruments in a relaxed group setting at The Music Circle. Caregivers stay close by their kids the entire time, making it a comfortable choice for little ones trying a group class for the first time.

Playtime Roanoke

Best known as an indoor play space, Playtime Roanoke also runs family music classes, along with parent-and-child activities and birthday parties throughout the year. Whether you're meeting up with friends or just need an easy way to burn off some energy, it's a solid go-to spot.

Roanoke Valley Music Studio

Several music programs live under one roof here, including Little Birds for babies through age 5. Classes blend singing and movement with sensory play in a relaxed setting where caregivers take part right alongside their little ones, and as kids grow, the studio offers classes that build on those early musical experiences.

Taubman Museum of Art

Art Venture at Taubman Museum of Art is a hands-on gallery built for little hands to explore painting, drawing, building, even 3D printing and music, spread across 14 different interactive stations, including a dedicated pre-toddler area. Since it's designed for kids ages 12 months to 17 years, there's genuinely something here for the littlest visitors as much as the older ones.

Tiny Tot Tamers

Through Zumbini-inspired sessions, Tiny Tot Tamers LLC brings caregivers and kids together for music and movement, from baby through preschool age. Families sing, dance, and move together, building coordination and confidence while giving caregivers a real reason to get down on the floor and join in.

Treble Makers Music

Singing, movement, and hands-on instruments come together at Treble Makers Music, where families explore different sounds side by side, parents included every step of the way.

Swim Lessons for Babies & Toddlers in Roanoke

Whether you're introducing your baby to the water or signing up a toddler for their first swim lessons, you'll find several great options around the Roanoke Valley. Many programs start with parent-and-child classes before moving kids into independent lessons as they grow. No matter where you start, swim lessons are a fun way to help little ones feel at home in the water.

British Swim School

Year-round lessons in a warm indoor pool make this a solid pick, starting for kids as young as 3 months old. Families can begin with parent-and-child classes before moving into lessons that build water safety and swimming skills as kids get older. Since classes run all year, it's an easy option for families who want to stick with lessons without a seasonal break.

Aquatic Adventures Swim School

Getting comfortable in the water starts early here, with lessons for every stage from infancy through the school-age years. Parents join in during the youngest classes, then step back as kids move into independent lessons that keep building their swimming skills and water safety knowledge.

YMCA of Virginia's Blue Ridge

Many local families turn to the YMCA for swim lessons, and it's easy to see why. Parent-and-child classes help babies and toddlers get comfortable in the water, while older kids can move into preschool swim lessons as their skills grow. With multiple locations and year-round classes, there's likely a YMCA close to home whether you're just starting out or building on lessons already underway.

Green Ridge Recreation Center

Beyond its swim lessons for a range of ages, including preschool beginners, Green Ridge Recreation Center also holds family swim times, giving little ones extra chances to practice outside of class.

Find Your Family's Favorite

Whether you're learning the basics of swimming at the YMCA or creating something new together at the Taubman Museum of Art, the Roanoke Valley has plenty of activities for families with young children. Many of these programs are affordable, or even free, and they're a great way to meet other families while giving little ones something new to try.

As your child grows, their interests will change too. One week they might be happiest listening to stories at the library, the next they're tumbling at their first gymnastics class or splashing in the pool without help. The fun is discovering what they love most.

Once your little one outgrows mommy-and-me classes, our guide to after-school activities and our roundup of Roanoke Valley preschools can help you plan what's next.
