How Halloween Became What It Is Today
Halloween, celebrated every year on October 31st, is a night for costumes, carved pumpkins, trick-or-treating, and homes decorated with spooky lights and yard displays. Today, it's a season built on costumes, plenty of sweet treats, pumpkins, and a bit of imagination, but where did it all begin?
The holiday's roots trace back more than 2,000 years to Samhain, a Celtic festival marking the end of harvest and the start of winter. The Celts believed the line between the living world and the spirit world grew thin on the last day of October leading into the first of November. That idea, more than anything else, is what eventually grew into the Halloween we now know.
Many of our favorite Halloween traditions developed over the years for good reason. Costumes were inspired by old traditions of dressing up to protect against wandering spirits, while trick-or-treating grew from customs where people would go door-to-door sharing songs or good wishes in exchange for something to eat. What's left now is dressing up and gathering the neighborhood on the last night of October.
Safety Tips for Trick-or-Treating with Kids
The American Academy of Pediatrics points out that child pedestrian injuries are more likely on Halloween than on any other night of the year, so a little planning goes a long way.
- Adults should always accompany young children when trick-or-treating.
- Older children should trick-or-treat in groups and avoid distractions like being on their phones while walking around.
- Know the route your kids will be taking, and confirm it's in a safe neighborhood.
- Only approach houses with porch lights on.
- Use sidewalks whenever possible.
- Don't assume cars will stop. Wear reflective gear to make yourself and your child more noticeable, and use crosswalks when they're available.
- Check that your child's costume, mask, and shoes all fit well, and make sure costumes are short enough to prevent tripping.
- Wear comfortable, slip-resistant shoes.
- Remind kids to never enter a house or car for a treat.
- Prepare your own home too: clear tripping hazards, sweep sidewalks and steps, and make sure outdoor lights work.

Looking for a fun twist on traditional trick-or-treating? Trunk-or-treat events across the Valley bring families together around decorated cars for costumes and candy, which many families find to be a safer, more contained option than walking door to door. Local churches and community organizations around the Roanoke Valley often host their own, so it's worth checking their calendars directly, especially if you've got younger kids or just want a simpler way to celebrate.
How to Pick a Trick-or-Treating Neighborhood in the Roanoke Valley
If you want to go the more traditional route, finding the right trick-or-treating spot can make Halloween night go smoother for the whole family. Of course, you can always opt for city or business sponsored events listed in this roundup, or you can pave your own way through your local neighborhood. Here's what's worth thinking about before you pick a neighborhood, whether that's your own street in Salem or a walk through somewhere new in Vinton or Grandin Village.
- Sidewalks and Walkability: Look for areas with sidewalks, safe walking areas, and homes that are close together. This is key for younger trick-or-treaters.
- Lighting: Well-lit streets and decorated homes can make it easier and more enjoyable for families to navigate after dark.
- Participation: Areas where many homes participate often create a fun, festive Halloween atmosphere.
- Crowd Size: Some families enjoy the excitement of busy streets, while others prefer a quieter, more relaxed route.
- Parking and Accessibility: If you are visiting an area outside of your neighborhood, make sure to check parking options as well as access to the area.
