Back to School in the Roanoke Valley: A Parent’s 2026 Guide to Dates, Deals, and the First-Day Reset

By Amanda Danaher

Everything Roanoke families need before the first bell, from start dates to the tax-free weekend to getting the routine back.

The first back-to-school email usually lands while our kids are still angling for one more afternoon at Splash Valley. One week it's pool towels and popsicles, and then the supply lists show up and everyone's asking when school actually starts. If you're somewhere in that in-between right now, this is the page to keep open.

We put this together as the one spot for what Roanoke Valley families need before the first day: when each district goes back, how to shop the tax-free weekend without losing your afternoon, and how local parents ease everyone into a routine that fell apart sometime around late June. We keep it current as dates and details firm up, so it's worth a second look as the season gets closer.

When Roanoke Valley Schools Go Back

Start dates aren't the same across the valley, which trips up families with kids in more than one system. Roanoke City, Roanoke County, Salem, and Botetourt each set their own calendar, and Bedford, Franklin, and Montgomery counties do too.

AT A GLANCE: First-Day Dates:

  • Roanoke City - August 11, 2026
  • Roanoke County - August 13, 2026
  • Salem City - August 18, 2026
  • Botetourt County - August 12, 2026

Our full district-by-district breakdown has first days, early-release schedules, and holiday breaks in one place. If your kids are split between two districts, that's the one for the fridge.

The Tax-Free Weekend, and Shopping It Without the Stress

Virginia's sales tax holiday runs Friday, August 7 through Sunday, August 9 this year. School supplies priced at $20 or less per item come tax-free, along with clothing and footwear at $100 or less per item, plus some emergency-prep and Energy Star products if you're stocking up on more than crayons. On a full supply list for more than one kid, it adds up.

A couple of things that help. Go early Friday or Saturday before shelves thin out. Keep the price caps in mind, since they apply per item and not per cart, so a $95 jacket qualifies and a $120 one doesn't. And check your kids' actual class lists first, so you're not buying glue sticks you already have three of. Our back-to-school shopping guide has where local parents go for supplies, backpacks, and first-day outfits around the valley.

If you want the fine print on what qualifies, the state keeps an official list.

Getting the Routine Back

The supplies are the easy part. The 6:45 wake-up after a summer of sleeping in is the hard part. Maybe it's slowly scaling back on bedtime for the next week to help with the early wake up time. One small tradition worth keeping is a last-hurrah treat before the routine locks in. A scoop at Pop's in Grandin or Blue Cow, a slow breakfast at Scrambled downtown, whatever marks the end of summer at your house. It gives everybody something to look forward to on the way into a big change.

Jena Beecher, a Roanoke mom of four, shares here key to helping everyone adjust to the new school schedule.

“We start two weeks before the first day of school, moving the waking and sleeping times gradually toward the school's schedule. I find that doing this helps me to have grace.”

Fall Activities and Sign-Ups

Back to school is also sign-up season. Rec leagues, dance and music classes, scouts, and school clubs fill up fast once the year starts, and the good time slots go first. If you're mapping out fall, our RoanokeFamily kids sports and classes guide covers what's offered around the valley.
